Preston Mill Barn is under new ownership (from late January 2025). We have purchased the Barn with the intention of it being a luxury holiday home in the stunningly beautiful Yorkshire Dales. We will endeavour to provide every comfort you may need for a relaxing and peaceful break.
Preston Mill Barn is a unique barn conversion located close to the old Wensley Railway Station near Leyburn. Nestled in stunningly beautiful countryside with incredible views across Wensleydale towards Penhill, it is a perfect retreat for two people (and one well behaved dog at a small additional charge).
A short stroll away is the village of Wensley, built by Lord Bolton to serve the estate, which also includes nearby Castle Bolton and Bolton Hall. Wensley has an excellent pub, a beautiful church, and should it be needed, a good bus link to the market town of Leyburn, less than 2 miles away.
The barn was first converted in 2011 and has just (June 2025) had a complete refurbishment. Short holiday breaks are now available.
Preston Mill Barn provides compact single level accommodation. The living area is open plan, with a raised Dunsley Highlander wood burner, lovely stone floors and wooden beams. French doors open out onto the terrace taking in the stunning views across the valley towards Penhill. Just off the living area is a kitchen with oak dining table and comfortable leather chairs. The south facing bedroom has two luxury (2000 pocket sprung) single beds. A shower wet room with toilet and washbasin is adjacent and completes the accommodation.
Step outside into the gorgeous south facing garden with patios and take in the amazing views across the valley. Surrounded by stunning countryside, this is the most precious spot to sit and enjoy the peace and tranquillity.
There is so much to enjoy in nearby Leyburn with quaint local shops, cafés, traditional pubs and a weekly farmers’ market. This is the perfect base for guests to enjoy walking, cycling, sightseeing or just for a quiet, romantic break.
The famous Leyburn Shawl is only a few steps from the market place in the centre of Leyburn and is accessible for walkers of all abilities and ages. Perhaps hop on the Wensleydale Vintage Bus to Ripon or Hawes, or maybe ride the train on the Wensleydale Railway. Alternatively, Castle Bolton, Middleham Castle, Constable Burton Hall Gardens and the nearby Aysgarth Falls are only a short distance away. Also, just outside the popular market town of Hawes is Hardraw, home to England’s highest unbroken waterfall.
Visit the nearby Forbidden Corner attraction in Coverdale where guests can follow a trail of follies, or the Georgian market town of Richmond, which offers many shops, restaurants, pubs and tea shops. This beautiful and historic town is settled high above the River Swale and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. Browse the weekly market or monthly farmers’ market with local produce and crafts.
Perhaps visit the historic city of Durham with its cathedral, castle and city walls. Popular York, with its minster and the Jorvik Centre, is further afield but worth the trip out.
